Exhibition at Bodø City Museum May 29th - August 18th:

Gerhard Munthe. Enchanted interiors

An exhibition from The National Museum

Although Gerhard Munthe (1849→1929)
is perhaps best known to most people as
a landscape painter, his most original and
important contributions were in the field
of design and interior decoration.
Inspired by antiquity, Norwegian folk art,
Japanese art and Art Nouveau, Munthe
was one of the first Norwegian industrial
designers at the close of the 19th century.
He created his first patterns for wallpapers,
tapestries, porcelain and graphic design
elements in the period 1891→93. His repertoire
subsequently expanded to include furniture,
silverware, bookbinding, illustrations, typefaces
and the decoration of entire rooms.

Munthe’s most important works as a designer
are his many interior décors, which were
characterised by his original shapes and
distinctive colours. Munthe claimed that
he had discovered a “Norwegian colour
instinct”. The most important colours were
lobster red, violet red, pottery blue, bluish
green and a vibrant yellow. These colours
were used in the majority of the dados he
decorated, featuring on furniture, wainscoting
and walls. Munthe’s interiors must be considered
Norway’s first Gesamtkunstwerk.
